Meet Dr. Dora Sanders

I am the founder of Apply SELF, a leadership development and professional learning consultancy based in Davenport, Florida. I hold a Ph.D. in Educational and Organizational Leadership, and I bring more than two decades of experience across Head Start, community-based organizations, higher education, and national fellowship initiatives. My doctoral research led to the creation of the SELF, Strength-Based Ecological Leadership, Framework, which now anchors my work with leaders at all levels. I design and facilitate leadership academies, professional learning experiences, retreats, and strategic consultations that honor people's strengths, contexts, and identities. My aim is to bridge research and practice so that leadership growth feels meaningful, practical, and sustainable.

A Strength-Based, Human-Centered Ethos

I designed the SELF Framework to honor the whole person, including strengths, lived experiences, relationships, and environments. My work rejects deficit narratives and instead cultivates psychological safety, affirmation, and honest reflection so that growth feels both challenging and deeply respectful of each leader's story and community.

Turning Research Into Everyday Leadership Practice

My practice brings academic rigor into accessible workshops, leadership labs, retreats, and consulting engagements. I translate complex leadership theory into clear, practical tools that fit varied contexts, including early childhood programs, educational institutions, nonprofits, and cross-sector teams, so leaders can immediately apply what they learn in real decisions and relationships.

The Four Pillars of the SELF Framework

  1. Strength-Based Foundations: Instead of fixing deficits or using generic checklists, the framework helps individuals and teams identify and intentionally apply their unique, innate strengths to drive sustainable change and meaningful growth.

  2. Ecological Systems Thinking: Leadership does not happen in a vacuum. This pillar focuses on context-driven growth, recognizing that leadership is deeply shaped by the specific environments, communities, and organizational systems where leaders operate.

  3. Reflective Practice: Continuous self-awareness is central to impactful leadership. By embedding intentional, reflective strategies into daily routines, leaders enhance their real-world decision-making, authenticity, and long-term professional growth.

  4. Adult Learning Principles: Grounded in how adults naturally process and integrate new information, this pillar ensures that all workshops, labs, and development experiences are highly engaging, practical, and immediately applicable.

Why It Differentiates From Other Models

  • Avoids One-Size-Fits-All: It rejects generic corporate leadership checklists. Every application of the framework is tailored to the individual's specific environment and strengths.

  • Cross-Sector Flexibility: While deeply rooted in extensive early childhood and organizational leadership research, the framework is highly scalable and flexible across diverse professional sectors, leadership levels, and emerging leaders.

  • Globally Informed: The framework is continuously refined by global leadership perspectives, cross-cultural research insights, and international presentations.
